RP2IPBP - eight riders, sixteen legs working against the wind

This Saturday looked good the night before, to Py's surprise a bit moist roads from some drizzle in the air but warm and windy again. A good number of riders showed up this morning -- nice.

IMG_7326.jpg

Starting out pushing over the few rollers, taking care around a few usually fast turns on small roads due to a good cover with all kind of leaves... Flying out East on Sound... was fun, just the few sections going South into strait head wind on Edwards was some work, good work Craig! Always good to have a few more strong riders. Also the strong Cross Winds on Youngs/Reeves were not too bad and fun, a slight tail wind component. Once more into the Wind on Doctors, then flying North Northville Turnpike and moving strong "over" the Tanks to IPBP.

Again, Rick managed to miss us at the start and join us at IPBP little later. Now counting eight, heading back into the Wind going West & South. Good share of work made the return fly by -- here a few views on Mill Rd of the pack:

Easy going from here, mostly tail wind... so a little bonus addition at WR Duck Pond taking the short hill loop before returning :-)

The Last Early Birds of the Season - what a day!

Last Sunday of October - means Last Early Birds ride for the season. No way to ride to the start, at least not without head lights, so he took the car. The day was looking great, after the storm of the night before moved away and the wind turned North-East. Just a small group today.

Here at the Cutchogue Deli on the North Route.

Easy going, a few strong moving sections only. Nice finish before starting into the Winter routine with Trevors route next Sunday. Also good seeing John at the Starbucks after the ride.

RP2IPBP - different colors + WWW

What is this Weather doing today? Rain in the morning, heavy rain/orange spots on the radar all over... Canceled Ride early, bit later while having breakfast on the patio outdoors -- it was nice and warm, just tropical. He decided to rehabilitate his ride with delayed start. However, may be on too short notice... no one else showed up.

Left RP around 11:30isch checking by at Tildas before heading off the usual route. Careful on NC and the WR hills -- a load of wet leaves and branches all over on the roads... plus a spray of sandy water... messy. A little rain set in with a few big drops shortly before hitting Sound -- taking a short break at a farm stand, got and great big red Apple as snack :-) Watching the dark clouds moving some where away NE and the rain stopped -- great...

Passing Boyscout Hill, heading South strait into some strong warm breeze from South, proceeding at the Flag South towards Mill Rd -- cutting short.

Flat shortly before reaching Mill Rd. Argrrr -- that's why he hates wet roads.

Finished up the ride.

Wet - Windy - Warm

RP2IPBP solo pull into strong North Eastern...

Same old, happily surprised by some nice sun shine this morning. So he went out to see who is coming for the ride today. Not so many, he was some what expecting more, as Sunday does not look so promising. He waited until 9:02a looked down the road -- no one else, just Dou&Py.
Steadily putting power into the drive train moving into that strong North Eastern almost all the way out.

The water level of the Sound was high and unusual rough it was.

Just started into the return -- how nice, some wind from behind -- Rick just turned into the Tanks as they went out... but he he eventually did not caught up on the fast return -- if he even tried, who knows.

A few view of Mill Rd in fall colors...

TOSREC 2009

This Wednesday was the 4th annual TOSREC.

In short: 7am Orient Pt to New London Ferry, start and end at New London, Ferry Dock. 180km (113mi) / 2250hm (GPS Edge 305), 1763hm (Garmin web based analysis after post processing)?!?!?.

Day of Ride Report:

Just a John, Kris, Nick, Kevin and Py showed up this year for the 2009 TOSREC challenge at the 7am Ferry to New London, Orient Point. A nice sun rise while take off.

IMG_7171.jpgIMG_7173.jpgIMG_7172.jpg

And a smooth ride with second breakfast for Py on the boat, some pre ride route discussions -- looks like it will be a good one again, dry and clear sky -- only a bit chilly and not expecting much warmup at all for the whole day -- a warmer underlayer was good and not a bit too much at any time.

IMG_7176.jpg

Rolling off the ferry at New London, efficiently and at steady good pace they left the City boundary in a snap, over the bridge and almost out they were...

IMG_7178.jpg

Quick "tree" stop after the turn on 49/Ekonik Hill Rd (mile 28)... Water stop for a coffee and warmup at the Dunkin' in Canterbury (mile 42.5).

IMG_7186.jpgIMG_7180.jpgIMG_7183.jpg

From here they entered the most enjyable and scenic part of the route as they turned into N Society Rd -- some very quite back country -- following the pre programmed GPS.

IMG_7190.jpgIMG_7187.jpgIMG_7191.jpg

This was working great, with one exception, going North on Cherry Hill making a left on Old Kimball Rd -- this was supposed to turn int Windy Hill Rd very soon, but instead is was a dead end and all sudden entering private property and was chained up closed :-( However, having the detailed map of the area a alternative route around, continuing just a mile North on Cherry Hill to Wade Rd and crossing over on Kimball Hill now worked just fine.

IMG_7195.jpg

Great scenery and also a nice little climb...

IMG_7197.jpgIMG_7199.jpgIMG_7202.jpg

moving along one teh moste quite roads out there, smooth and colorful array of trees...

IMG_7211.jpgIMG_7215.jpgIMG_7218.jpg

and flying down hill...

IMG_7220.jpg

Entering 97 and following up back roads at Kenyon Rd and a nice climb on New Hill up to Station Rd. A little wondering where that so called "Air Line Rail Trail" was gone.. no sights of it even we should have been rigth on it now, so what, continuing on Station to Eastbrook to Section via James L Goodwin State Forest -- very nice and scening vistas down to Pine Acres Lake to the right -- did any one looked??? (I got a glimpse, but did not stopped)

IMG_7225.jpgIMG_7224.jpgIMG_7226.jpg

And making the long way back South on Brook Rd. Quick water fill up stop at mile 80 (Jewett City) and heading back to the Ferry. Little funny look on a new traffic routing on 2 going to 214 and nice fun moving over the rollign 214 to 117. Returning to the ferry at 4p. Soem time for a snack and a slice of pizza in New London Down Town.
